why are people always so pissy about the fact that taylor swift writes the majority of her songs about love and relationships like she’s a 23 year old white girl from pennsylvania what do you want her to write about the thug life

Some ways in which gay and lesbian people benefit from monosexism    →

First - some background:

  • I’ve been seeing more and more people on tumblr arguing that monosexism can’t exist because gay and lesbian people don’t benefit from the oppression of bi people
  • This is a rebuttal of this argument
  • However, monosexism isn’t about gay and lesbian people

I find this interesting because in one breath it’s acknowledged that bi folks are disproportionately trans, poc (black especially although this is left out), and women and yet not one mention of how all the statistics given do not control for gender identity or race.

That is to say, the majority (if not all) the disparities listed here are probably a function of transphobia, sexism, and racism, not monosexism. To frame it as monosexism erases the real root and allows those issues to be appropriated by white, cis, and male folks. Which is why so many poc and trans mga folks are against the concept. Yet without addressing these issues, we’re labeled as angry and divisive. Smh…sound familiar? Same shit different day I guess.

Am I saying biphobia doesn’t exist? no. I’m merely suggesting that monosexism as a concept doesn’t hold up and no one’s addressed these concerns. But then everyone gets defensive when they’re called out for being anti-black and transphobic.

When “they” are a genderqueer poc and have written a book about intersectional bisexual politics, where the idea of monosexism as structure also comes from? Then yeah, “they” do get defensive.

You cannot separate out bisexuality from being trans or a poc. These are not mutually exclusive identities or oppressions, they’re intersections. That’s the whole point.
